The Word this Week (Proverbs, Exodus, Romans)

Beloved, the older we get, the more we realize how important it is to respect authority at home and in the world. This too must be navigated by the wisdom of God in and through Christ our Lord.  

Proverbs 1:8-9

⁸ Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction

and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.

⁹ They will be a garland to grace your head

and a chain to adorn your neck.

Proverbs 12:1 

Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge,

but he who hates correction is stupid

Proverbs 24:21-22

²¹   Fear the Lord and the king, my son,

and do not join with the rebellious,

²²   for those two will send sudden destruction upon them,

and who knows what calamities they can bring?

Proverbs 28:15-16

¹⁵   Like a roaring lion or a charging bear

is a wicked man ruling over a helpless people.

¹⁶   A tyrannical ruler lacks judgment,

but he who hates ill-gotten gain will enjoy a long life.

Exodus 20:12

¹² “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.

Romans 13:1-4

¹ Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. ² Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. ³ For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and he will commend you. ⁴ For he is God’s servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God’s servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.
